As I’m wrapping up this school year, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on what went well and what I could have done better in my intervention groups. One thing that I would have liked to have done better was to send more frequent and detailed newsletters to parents. Last year I was amazing at that, but unfortunately this year, the newsletters were few and far between. That is definitely something I will work on for next year.

Something that went really well this year, was the tremendous academic growth my students made. Not only did my students meet their IEP goals, they met grade level benchmark expectations in many areas. I feel like I had the perfect synergy of intensive intervention with fun and engagement. The 3 core things I did to help my students progress with leaps and bounds are:

  1. Pair systematic, research-based direct instruction with motivating characters and activities. See these strategies in action here.
  2. Scaffold instruction to increase student independence and mastery. For examples, click here.
  3. Provide multiple opportunities for practice with authentic text. Take a peek into my classroom here.
